Turtle monitoring survey

Our latest turtle monitoring survey was conducted by Pendoley Environmental in late February. The team alternated between landside and offshore surveying of island beaches.

This survey is the third of the 2022/23 marine turtle breeding season for Leichhardt and was designed to target the peak of the flatback and green turtle hatching period over 14 days to collect data on hatchling orientation. The earlier surveys were undertaken during the hawksbill, green and flatback turtle nesting seasons and the hawksbill hatching period.

The survey is required for our environmental approvals process to fill the knowledge gaps regarding the abundance, presence, and distribution of adult nesting marine turtle species and the behaviour of hatchling turtles on beaches potentially impacted by light from the Eramurra Project.
